Why Is This Unique?
This is one of the most exceptional pieces of landscape jasper you can find. Its clarity of imagery and range of colors and detail are unprecedented. Jasper is a compact sedimentary material – an opaque variety of chalcedony that is chosen for its beautiful color, pattern or appearance when cutting is done. While picture jasper can be found all over the world, specific colors or patterns are unique to the geographic region from which they originate. A particularly fine example is Deschutes Jasper, which hails from Oregon. More specifically this piece comes from the famous collection of Hoot Elkins (deceased), who was the original miner of the material in the 1960's. He collected and hoarded many stones, consequently amassing copious fantastic specimens. These pieces are cut from his personal collection.
