Sonoran Sunrise comes from the Milpillas Mine in Sonora, Mexico. Mining began in 2006 primarily for the production of copper ore, however miners encountered the material now known as Sonora Sunrise and rescued it. Named for the lovely and colorful sunsets over the Sonoran Desert, the stone is a mixture of chrysocolla (blue and aqua colors), and cuprite (red) and either iron or the mineral tenorite, which produces the black colors. Unfotunately, due to an increase in cartel activity in Mexico and the copper being mostly mined out, the mine closed in 2019. There are no other known sources of Sonoran Sunrise.
