Music That Moves Me
Music is a constant force and companion in my daily life. When I’m working there’s a 90% chance music is filling the room. However, depending on the work, I’ll choose a sound that fits the mood. For instance, when keeping track of sales in an excel spread sheet or going through emails, low-fi beats, soft piano jazz, or classical are just the soothing touch I need. I can't have anything too distracting with lyrics or a beat that would make me want to dance (instead of focusing on my tasks at hand).
However, when I’m in front of my stone table working with gems or painting, I crave more energetic beats. Music helps propel my creativity and I get really excited to work with my colorful stones and see my ideas materialize. Consequently, I like to put on some “pep” (to match my step). Lately, I’ve been listening to Artist’s Radio on Spotify. One, I’m loving this past month is the Tom Petty station (Runnin’ Down a Dream is a favorite!). This station plays all sorts of fun 90’s bands while evoking memories I have when listening to bands like Toad the Wet Sprocket, The Samples, and Guster. These bands’ music brought back a wave of nostalgia; I immediately dug through my collection of old CDs and tapes (yes, cassette tapes!) to play. Instantly, it sparked inspiration and sentimentality.
While jamming out to those classics, I created the Pyrite in Slate Pendant. Elegant and stylish but dare I say also…edgy? Clearly, the rock music had a larger impact on me than I first thought. The Pyrite in Slate necklace was designed as a part of my larger Men’s collection. However, it’s also a great accessory for the unconventional and funky fashion-forward women in our lives. After all, nothing is more rock-n-roll than being a rule breaker.
As a jewelry designer and painter, obviously I appreciate all forms of art. However, music is an instant sensory experience that effects my mood and mindset in an instant. Listening to the songs I grew up with takes me down a fond trip to memory lane. While new music helps me form a new connection to an artist and sound. Whether it’s rock or oldies, soft jazz or acoustic Spanish guitar; my spirit and creativity ignite. No matter what I’m listening to or what jewelry piece I’m working on, I’m goin' wherever the music leads and will keep runnin' down a dream.
