Red Carpet Ready
Every year when Hollywood’s award season rolls around, I take another look at the jewelry in my safe. I’m often loaning jewels for the red carpet and it’s fun to see how dress up has evolved and what I can suggest to stylists for their clients. Back in the day, actresses that were true movie stars wanted to own legendary jewelry collections that they would wear both onscreen and off. Think Elizabeth Taylor whose collection sold for over $116 million in 2011, Grace Kelly with her 10.48 ct Cartier diamond engagement ring or Marlene Dietrich with her epic Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin bracelets with emeralds the size of quail eggs. But now, life has gotten so casual that actresses prefer to borrow important jewelry rather than own them. In fact, my own jewelry designs skew toward every-day pieces. However, even though daily life isn’t as glamorous, and those prized important pieces aren’t worn as frequently, how do you feel about having certain jewels you only wear once or twice a year?
I still remember those special pieces reserved for black tie that my grandmother and mother pulled out. A special diamond pendant, the big star sapphire cocktail ring, the drop earrings… These particular jewels memorably marked certain events or defined a special occasion. So, in honor of red carpet season, I am launching some large scale earrings: Altered States. These stand-out jewels are detachable so you can wear the studs in your casual life and then add the drops for some serious glamour when you go out for the night on the town.
