Style and glamour are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Style is a way of expressing oneself through clothing, makeup, and accessories. It is about creating a unique look that reflects one's personality and taste. Glamour, on the other hand, is about creating an illusion of beauty and luxury. It is about looking perfect, polished, and sophisticated. I like to think a person can be both!
I learned a lot from watching my grandmother, and I know she studied the elegant ladies she saw in magazines or the media of her day. She channeled her observations into her own signature style and glamorous look all by herself. Yet, in today’s world, the celebrities we see have mostly become mannequins for stylists to “dress”. Very few express their own sense of style whether it is day-to-day life or on the red carpet. And, in terms of jewelry, most are often given jewels to wear to events. So how does one learn to dress or accessorize in the real world today?
There are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind. First, consider the color and texture of your outfit when selecting your accessories. A simple black dress or pantsuit can be elevated with colorful jewels, My go-to are always bigger earrings, such as the Gallant Earrings which pack quite a punch yet are sleek, sexy and add a nice pop of color.
On the other hand, a splashy or loud print outfit may require more neutral or complementary accessories to balance out the look. Try out something subtle but still uplifting to one's face, like a pair of Daily Ear-clip "studs" in a non-competing hue.
When in doubt, it’s best to stick to a single statement piece such as a bold necklace or pair of earrings and keep the rest of your accessories minimal so as not to overwhelm your look. I like the idea of a big pendant on a short gold torque, too – such as the Green/Green No. 3 piece which is all one "hue" but gives visual interest.
I wish I had the opportunity to ask my grandmother if she would have worn borrowed jewels (or clothes) if given the chance. We will never know her answer, but I do know that she taught me that accessorizing any look is all about finding the right balance and selecting pieces that enhance your outfit without overpowering it – be that a jewel, a scarf, shoes, etc. And for everyone else, no matter what, embracing your personal style and letting your fashion choices reflect your unique personality is what’s really important.
