Why Is This Unique?
The mineral smithsonite was named after James Smithson, the British chemist and mineralogist, who was also the founding donor and namesake of the Smithsonian Institution. A principal source of zinc until the 1880s, smithsonite is typically found as botryoidal (grape-like) masses and only rarely found as well-formed crystals. It comes in a range of vibrant colors, such as green, pink, gray, and white, although the most prized color is the famous blue-teal color. Gem quality smithsonite is very rare and typically exhibits a semi-transparent bluish-green color with beautiful luster, such as exemplified in this double long strand.
