Tourmaline is celebrated for its incredible spectrum, but few varieties carry the legendary status of Siberian pink. Achieving both a vivid, highly saturated purplish-pink color chemistry (manganese-rich elbaite) and dense, uniformly aligned growth tubes is an extreme statistical anomaly. Most tourmaline crystals with these internal chatoyant tubes are structurally fragile or heavily fractured; finding a piece clean enough to be cut into a durable, smooth cabochon is exceptionally rare. Even then, bringing out the signature cat’s eye effect requires master-level lapidary work: the cutter must align the apex of the cabochon precisely perpendicular to the internal tubes to create a sharp, luminous line of light. While tourmaline is mined globally in places like Brazil, Madagascar, and Mozambique, material from other regions cannot replicate the precise, electric purplish-pink hue historically known as siberite. With classic deposits in Siberia having seen severely limited or halted commercial production for decades, large, high-clarity cat's eye specimens remain treasured rarities prized by collectors and high-end jewelry designers alike.
