Why Is This Unique?
Jasper is a compact sedimentary material – an opaque variety of chalcedony that is chosen for its beautiful color, pattern or appearance when cutting is done. While picture jaspers can be found all over the world, specific colors or patterns are unique to the geographic region from which they originate. A particularly fine example is Deschutes Jasper, which hails from Oregon. More specifically this piece comes from the famous collection of Hoot Elkins (deceased), who was the original miner of the material in the 1960's. He collected and hoarded many stones, consequently amassing copious fantastic specimens. These pieces are cut from his personal collection.
Sapphires were first found in Montana in 1865 by early gold prospectors mining the Missouri river near Helena. These sapphires were the first sapphires found in the United States that were of gem-quality. One of the most striking differences is their color. Sapphires from Montana are unique in that they naturally occur in light pastels, unique blue-greens, and smoky grays. Yogo Sapphires are the most precious sapphires found in North America and are considered to be among the finest sapphires in the world. These unique gems come from only limited area, named Yogo Gulch, located in the Little Belt Mountains of Montana. A majority of natural Montana sapphires will be under 1ct with the majority under 1/2ct, and a very limited supply of the sapphires are over 1ct, which makes the stone substantially more expensive per carat.
